Effect of Salt Stress on Growth, Membrane Damage, Antioxidant Metabolism and Artemisinin Accumulation in Artemisia annua L

چکیده
Salinity in soil and irrigation water is one of the major factors that limit crop productivity. The effects of salinity on growth, lipid peroxidation, the antioxidant defence system and changes in artemisinin content were studied in Artemisia annua L. Salinity treatments were established by adding 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM of sodium chloride (NaCl) to the soil. Salt stress negatively affected the growth of plants, measured in terms of shoot and root length and dry weight. Photosynthetic attributes and total chlorophyll content were also reduced by salinity stress. Salinity treatments inhibited the activity of carbonic anhydrase and significantly increased electrolyte leakage and proline content. Moreover, salt stress induced oxidative stress, as indicated by the level of lipid peroxidation. The activities of antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were upregulated by salt stress. Most importantly, a synergistic relationship was noted between endogenous H2O2 and artemisinin content i.e. both contents increased under low levels of salinity (50 and 100 mM) and thereafter decreased. Thus, it can be concluded that A. annua species is very sensitive to soil salinity; however, moderate saline conditions can be utilized to obtain more artemisinin. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Effects of CuSO4 and AgNO3 on artemisinin and phenolic compound in shoot cultures of Artemisia annua L.
In the present study, the effect of exogenous silver nitrate (Ag+) and copper sulfate (Cu2+) applications on production of artemisinin and phenolic compounds as well as oxidative stress in the shoot cultures of Artemisia annua was investigated. A significant decrease in the shoot biomass and the total chlorophyll was observed in the shoots exposed to increased Ag concentration. Additionally, a ...

Despite the importance of Artemisia annua L. as the only source of the anti-parasitic drug artemisinin, little is known on the effects of biotic and abiotic stress on artemisinin accumulation. Water deficit is the most limiting factor on plant growth, however it can trigger secondary metabolite accumulation, depending on the plant growth stage and intensity. A. annua cultivated in growth chambe...

In this study, selenite ions were reduced to selenium nanoparticles using a leaf extract of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants. Characterization of synthesized nanoparticles using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometry indicated the formation of variable size of selenium nanoparticles, suggesting that leaf extract could form polydispersed nanoparti...

The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in plant development and environmental stress response. Additionally, ABA also regulates secondary metabolism such as artemisinin in the medicinal plant Artemisia annua L. Although an earlier study showed that ABA receptor, AaPYL9, plays a positive role in ABA-induced artemisinin content improvement, many components in the ABA signali...
متن کاملThe Roles of Selenium in Protecting Lemon Balm against Salt Stress. Ghader Habibi* and Somaie Sarvary
Plant metabolism and productivity is influenced adversely by salinity. Exogenous selenium (Se), applied as sodium selenate in biofortification programmes, has been found effective in alleviating the salt induced damage in plants. The study was conducted in order to determine the effects of exogenous Se supply (10 μM) on the resistance of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) plants to salt stress...
